Crisis Pregnancy Centers win Supreme Court Victory

As it ended its term, the Supreme Court delivered a major victory to crisis pregnancy centers by siding with the First Amendment against a California that forced these centers to post a 29-word, 48-point-font notice in up to 13 languages referring clients to free or low-cost abortions. Liberty Counsel represented three-crisis pregnancy centers challenging California's forced abortion speech law at the High Court.
But, when I got to page 7 of the opinion, I was very excited to read about two of our cases involving laws that banned change counsel in California and New Jersey. We challenged both laws, but the two Courts of Appeal upheld them and created a new “professional speech" category, thus providing less protection.
The Supreme Court criticized these lower court opinions and rejected a lower level of “professional speech." This means the handwriting is on the wall that laws banning counsel for unwanted same-sex attractions, behavior, or identity will fall under the First Amendment Free Speech Clause.The Court's findings explicitly adopt the arguments Liberty Counsel has made all along in counseling cases, which is that there is no such thing as "professional speech" that is relegated to less protection under the First Amendment.
Justice Thomas notes in his opinion that disagreements about the efficacy of services cannot be used to suppress professional speech:"The dangers associated with content-based regulations of speech are also present in the context of professional speech. As with other kinds of speech, regulating the content of professionals' speech pose[s] the inherent risk that the Government seeks not to advance a legitimate regulatory goal, but to suppress unpopular ideas or information… 

That is the bottom line. Government suppression of speech about change therapy counseling is precisely the goal of misguided laws framed to squash this category of counseling altogether.  
We have several change counsel cases pending, and we plan to re-open the two cases mentioned in the Supreme Court opinion. We will not rest until these laws are history!

California's AB 2943 is among the most overreaching efforts to outlaw change therapy counseling. AB 2943 declares "advertising, offering to engage in, or engaging in sexual orientation change efforts with an individual" is fraudulent business practice. 

If signed into law, AB 2943 would make it unlawful for any person to sell books, including the Bible, counseling services, or anything else that directs people to trust in Jesus Christ to help them overcome unwanted same-sex attraction or gender confusion.
Liberty Counsel recently filed suits in federal court against the Cities of Tampa and Boca Raton, and Palm Beach County, Florida, for their adoption of ordinances that prohibit minors from receiving voluntary counseling from licensed professionals to reduce or eliminate their unwanted same-sex attractions, behaviors, or gender confusion.

The Planned Parenthood abortion chain, a huge donor to Democrats’ political campaigns, sent a letter to Democrat leaders within hours of Kennedy’s announcement, demanding that they reject anyone from Trump’s list of potential nominees, according to The Washington Post.

Pro-life advocates and other conservatives have praised Trump for the possible Supreme Court nominees on his list. He chose conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch from the list in 2017.

On Wednesday, Trump promised to choose a nominee from the list of 25 conservative leaders, most of whom already are judges on federal circuit courts and state supreme courts.

“We need intellect, we need so many things,” Trump said at a rally Wednesday in North Dakota. “There is so many elements that goes into the making of a great justice of the Supreme Court. …

“Democrats want judges who will rewrite the Constitution any way they want to do it, and take away your Second Amendment, erase your borders, throw open the jailhouse doors and destroy your freedoms,” he continued.

Leading abortion advocates like Planned Parenthood already are putting the wheels in motion for fundraising and political action plans to attempt to stop any nominee who might overturn Roe v Wade. That will put the onus on pro-life advocates to step up their fundraising and put up concerted efforts to ensure the next Supreme Court justice is someone who will respect the rule of law rather than make up a fictitious abortion right from the bench.

The good news for pro-life advocates is that Republicans hold a small majority in the Senate and have been successful in approving Trump’s nominees on a majority vote. Sen. McConnell has been successful in ensuring that the Senate can vote on such nominees without a filibuster by pro-abortion Democrats.

President Trump Makes Planned Parenthood Defunding Official, Rule Would Cut $60 Million in Taxpayer Funding

President Donald Trump yesterday made his proposed rule official to defund Planned Parenthood of the $60 million dollars that it receives via Title X Family Planning dollars. Last week the president said the rule would be forthcoming and late Tuesday the Trump Administration released the text to the proposed rule, which will go into effect after a standard 60-day public comment period.

This is the second time Trump has taken steps to revoke taxpayer funding for the nation’s biggest abortion business — after yanking taxpayer from from International Planned Parenthood during his first week in office.

The proposed rule contains three important parts. The first prohibits recipients of taxpayer funds under Title X from referring women for abortions. The second requires companies that receive Family Planning funds to maintain separate facilities that do abortions as opposed to having their abortion businesses in the same facility as the Family Planning business. Because that is something Planned Parenthood refuses to do, it will no longer be eligible for taxpayer funding under President Trump’s proposed rule.

The final section of the rule requires recipients of the Title 10 Family Planning dollars to ensure that they follow all state and local laws requiring reporting of child abuse. Interestingly, the Planned Parenthood abortion company has repeatedly run afoul of such laws by refusing to report cases of child abuse or rape to law enforcement officials after killing the babies of young teenage girls in abortions.

The proposed rule is available here, and it will be available for public comment for 60 days after it is published in the Federal Register.

The preamble of the proposed rule explains that the statutory authority for the Title X program “contains the following prohibition, which has not been altered since it was enacted in 1970: ‘None of the funds appropriated under this title shall be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning.’” The preamble then goes on to state that the Department interprets this section “to establish a broad prohibition on funding, directly or indirectly, activities related to abortion as a method of family planning…The Department has determined that the existing regulations do not ensure compliance with the prohibition” in the original statute.

The three new key sections are as follows:

Section 59.14, Prohibits Title X projects from referring for abortion
“A Title X project may not perform, promote, refer for, or support, abortion as a method of family planning, nor take any other affirmative action to assist a patient to secure such an abortion. If asked, a medical provider may [emphasis added] provide a list of licensed, qualified, comprehensive health service providers (some, but not all of which also provide abortion, in addition to comprehensive prenatal care), but only if a woman who is currently pregnant clearly states that she has already decided to have an abortion.”

Section 59.15, Requires Title X entities to maintain physical and financial separation
“A Title X project must be organized so that it is physically and financially separate …. from activities which are prohibited…”[abortion]. The proposed rule outlines factors for the Secretary to take into consideration to determine whether objective integrity and independence exists, including; “the existence of separate and accurate accounting records,” “the degree of separation from facilities,” and “the existence of separate personnel.”

Section 59.17, Compliance with abuse reporting requirements
“Title X projects shall comply with all State and local laws requiring notification or reporting of child abuse, child molestation, sexual abused, rape, incest, intimate partner violence, or human trafficking (collectively ‘State notification laws’).”In order to receive funds, projects must provide documentation in a number of areas, including a plan to comply with State laws, annual training of all individuals serving clients on behalf of the Title X project, and protocols to counsel minors on how to resist coercion, etc.

President Trump talked about the new rule last night in a speech to the pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List.

“So today, we have kept another promise. My administration has proposed a new rule to prohibit Title X funding from going to any clinic that provides abortions,” he said.

In comments to LifeNews, Catherine Glenn Foster, President and CEO of Americans United for Life, applauded the proposed rule saying “it will go a long way toward getting taxpayers out of the business of funding abortionists like Planned Parenthood. Women can do much better than Planned Parenthood. Comprehensive, preventive healthcare centers outnumber Planned Parenthood 20 to 1, and that’s where women receive genuine expert care without the shadow of abortion hanging over them.”

Ashley McGuire is a Senior Fellow with The Catholic Association,agreed, telling LifeNews: “Americans don’t want their hard-earned tax dollars paying for abortions, a fact polling consistently confirms. In redirecting Title X funding to nonviolent women’s health centers, the government ensures that the needs of low income women will continue to be served without lining the pockets of corporate abortion giant, Planned Parenthood.”

The United States spends about $260 million in Title X funds annually for family planning for low-income individuals, and Planned Parenthood is a huge recipient of those funds, as much as $50-$60 million annually — which will be cut off after the rule goes into effect.

“This proposal does not necessarily defund Planned Parenthood, as long as they’re willing to disentangle taxpayer funds from abortion as a method of family planning, which is required by the Title X law,” a Trump administration official said. “Any grantees that perform, support, or refer for abortion have a choice – disentangle themselves from abortion or fund their activities with privately raised funds.”

Of course, Planned Parenthood is unwilling to do so. Abortion is its primary focus, and it already is threatening a lawsuit to stop the defunding. However, the proposal is modeled after similar Reagan administration rules that the U.S. Supreme Court upheld in Rust v. Sullivan in 1991.

The proposal comes amid strong pleas from grassroots Americans and members of Congress to defund the abortion giant Planned Parenthood. In April, 154 U.S. House members sent a letter to HHS Secretary Alex Azar asking for a rule to prohibit tax dollars from being use to promote abortions.

Title X funds are supposed to be used to help low-income women and men receive birth control, cancer screenings and other health care services. While the tax money cannot be used to pay for abortions, it indirectly funds Planned Parenthood’s vast abortion business.

The Trump administration has cut several other streams of funding to Planned Parenthood as well. Soon after Trump took office, he signed the Mexico City Policy to prevent the funding of groups that promote or perform abortions overseas. This includes the International Planned Parenthood Federation, which received tax dollars under the Obama administration.

In addition, in 2017, the Trump administration cut millions of dollars in grants to Planned Parenthood through the failed Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program. HHS spokesman Mark Vafiades told the New York Times last year that there is very little evidence that the program was successful. However, the abortion chain recently filed a lawsuit challenging the cuts.

Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion business in America, aborting approximately 320,000 unborn babies every year. Its most recent annual report showed a record income of $1.46 billion, with about half a billion dollars coming from taxpayers.

In December, the U.S. Department of Justice said it is investigating whether the abortion chain illegally sold aborted baby body parts.

President Trump Ends Taxpayer Funding to Two Biggest Abortion Businesses in Africa

Americans no longer are giving money to the two biggest abortion businesses in Africa, thanks to a 2017 Trump administration policy.

And it’s making a huge difference for life.

Marie Stopes International, a British-based abortion chain, and the International Planned Parenthood Federation received millions of USAID tax dollars under pro-abortion President Barack Obama to provide and advocate for abortions in Africa.

However, in 2017, President Donald Trump cut that funding under the Mexico City Policy, which prohibits tax dollars from funding international groups that provide or promote abortions.

Now, Marie Stopes programs in Burkina Faso are slated to close in June as a result of the cuts, Devidiscourse News reports.

The abortion chain’s budget for its Burkina Faso programs came entirely from U.S. tax dollars; it would have shut down sooner if the British government had not provided tax dollars to make up for the U.S. cuts, according to the report.

Marie Stopes leaders in Africa said they employed ten women in Burkina Faso to offer “advice on family planning and reproductive healthcare.” This almost certainly included abortion, even though killing unborn babies is illegal in many African countries.

Here’s more from the report:

MSI and the International Planned Parenthood Federation are among only four to reject the conditions of the [Mexico City Policy.] They offer abortion services, in accordance with local rules, and say it is the last resort in preventing unwanted or unsafe births.

USAID says 733 other NGOs still receive funding. But in Africa, MSI and IPPF are the two largest NGO providers of free contraception and family planning advice.

The NGOs say the contraceptive programmes are crucial in Burkina, where the fertility rate is 5.5 births per woman.

In some villages the MS Ladies operate from government centres, supplementing the limited services on offer. The same grant also pays for training for health workers in 80 government clinics.

Abortion activists complain that the policy has been devastating for women in Africa, but the only real damage is to the abortion businesses of Marie Stopes and Planned Parenthood. Both could continue to receive USAID to provide contraception and life-saving health care; all they must do is agree to stop aborting unborn babies.

The Trump administration did not cut any foreign aid when it instituted the pro-life policy, and of the more than 700 groups that receive USAID, only four refused to comply. That is a compliance rate of 99.5 percent.

Previous news reports indicate that two of the four groups that refused to comply are International Planned Parenthood Federation and Marie Stopes International, two of the largest abortion businesses in the world.

In February, a U.S. government report noted that of the four groups that refused to comply, three previously received funds through USAID.

“USAID is currently working to transition the activities of those organizations to other partners while minimizing disruption of service,” the report stated.

The International Planned Parenthood Federation performed more than 1 million abortions in 2016, an increase of 13.5 percent over 2015, and received more than $27 million in U.S. government grants in 2015-2016.

Under the Obama administration, Marie Stopes International also received U.S. taxpayer funding. Like Planned Parenthood in America, Marie Stopes has a shoddy reputation, with one recent report showing about 400 botched abortions in a two-month period.

Those in the House of Representatives concerned about the lives of preborn babies are trying, once again, to take all federal money away from Planned Parenthood.

They need your support if they are to succeed.

Congress is working on finalizing the fiscal 2018 Labor, Health and Human Services funding measure. The current deadline for having this in place is March 23. But there is a major battle going on among members of the House Labor HHS spending panel. Those on the panel who care about the babies are insisting on several provisions to protect them. Those who support Planned Parenthood are dead set against the changes.

The measures being pushed by those who want to protect babies include:

• Cutting off all federal funding of Planned Parenthood
• Eliminating the federal family planning program (Title X)
• Formally ending the failed Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program
• Ending funding research that uses human fetal tissue obtained after an abortion

These are all actions supported by American Life League and the pro-life movement.

As you would expect, the Planned Parenthood supporters on the panel are fighting vigorously against these efforts. There will be a lot of pressure to compromise and approve a bill that does not contain these provisions. We are already hearing some representatives—who say they support the babies—talk about accepting last year’s funding language, which did not have the new restrictions, as a compromise.

Compromise means only one thing: MORE DEAD BABIES.

Trump Administration Expands Mexico City Policy to Further Prevent Foreign Aid Funding Abortion

Washington, D.C.:  The U.S. State Department issued a report late yesterday with an update on the expansions to the "Mexico City Policy" re-authorized by President Trump on his third day in office. This policy was first signed by President Ronald Reagan in 1984, and later again by President Bush in 2001. It curtails the use of foreign aid dollars going to to non-governmental organizations that "perform or actively promote abortion as a method of family planning." The Trump Administration not only reinstated the Bush 2001 version of this policy, but has expanded it, renaming the initiative "Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance."

"Reinstating this policy just days into office solidified support for the president from many pro-life people across the country," said Ed Martin, President of Phyllis Schlafly Eagles. "We are encouraged to see not only continued implementation of it but an expansion into more departments and more foreign aid. These types of executive policies have well-earned the reputation that Donald Trump is one of the most pro-life Presidents we have experienced.

Vatican doubles down on awarding Dutch abortion activist with pontifical honor

VATICAN CITY, January 26, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – Vatican officials are not backing down from awarding a leading Dutch abortion activist a pontifical honor, nor do they plan to do additional vetting or change their procedure of exchanging such diplomatic honors in the future.  

Controversy arose earlier this month when leading abortion activist Liliane Ploumen displayed on Dutch television a pontifical honor bestowed on her during a visit to the Vatican in June 2017.

Ploumen boasted that she had received a “high distinction from the Vatican, from the Pope,” in a video broadcast.

C-Fam's Austin Ruse noted that while the award is the highest papal honor given by the Vatican, "Ploumen, who has identified as Catholic, is not considered a Dame of the Order of St. Gregory by the fact that she received the medal bearing his name. To be a Dame in the Order, she would have gone through an investiture ceremony with a Bishop.​"

Catholics around the world, stunned by the news, reached out to the Vatican for an explanation for awarding a politician who strongly supports abortion – and homosexuality – such an honor.

“An official would not say whether better vetting procedures would be implemented in the future to prevent it happening again,” reports the National Catholic Register’s Ed Pentin,  “insisting instead this was ‘a very traditional procedure’ for such an ‘historic occasion’  and was really meant as a way of ‘honoring the king.’  It is something that ‘has been done many times in the past for other visiting heads of state.”  

“The source added the honor was no different to someone ‘going to visit someone else’s house as a guest, and who comes with companions,” continues the report.  “One shows a minimum amount of respect to whom he brings.’”

Last week Paloma García Ovejero, deputy spokesperson of the Holy See Press Office, said:  “The honor of the Pontifical Order of St. Gregory the Great received by Mrs. Lilianne Ploumen, former Minister of Development, in June 2017 during the visit of the Dutch Royals to the Holy Father, responds to the diplomatic practice of the exchange of honors between delegations on the occasion of official visits by Heads of State or Government in the Vatican.”

Ovejero insisted that the award, “is not in the slightest a placet (an expression of assent) to the politics in favor of abortion and of birth control that Mrs Ploumen promotes.” 

Critics maintain, nevertheless, that the optics remain troubling and that awarding a high honor to Ploumen continues to remain a grave concern.  

Holland’s Cardinal Wim Eijk, a member of the Pontifical Academy for Life, carefully distanced himself from the controversy last week, saying he had no part in the Vatican’s action.  

In 2017, Ploumen launched SheDecides, which, according to the movement’s website, is a “global movement” meant to “support the fundamental rights of girls and women to decide freely and for themselves about their sexual lives, including whether, when, with whom and how many children they have. This includes having access to modern contraception, to sexual and relationship literacy and safe abortion.”  

“SheDecides is unapologetic about our focus on the full spectrum of sexual and reproductive rights and health,” the site continues, “including safe abortion and comprehensive sexuality education.” 

According to a joint report filed by OnePeterFive and The Lepanto Institute, which broke the story, “The SheDecides initiative came in response to the funding gap for “family planning” facilities around the world created after U.S. President Donald Trump reinstated the Mexico City Policy, which blocks American federal funding for NGOs providing abortion services. Within six months, SheDecides — which has the support of 60 countries — had received pledges totaling $300 million (USD)."

All this occurred within the months immediately preceding Ploumen’s reception of the Vatican Award in June 2017. 

“It’s difficult to be dismissive of Ploumen’s award as a simple oversight,” a OnePeterFive / The Lepanto Institute report pointed out, “which lends some Vatican watchers to wonder if perhaps (Ploumen’s) bold claims about the award being confirmation of her work might have some truth to them.”

NY State Appeals Court rules against assisted suicide - unanimously

This is good news , but it doesn't mean assisted suicide cannot be passed legislatively. It simply means there is no right to suicide in the NY State Constitution.

The court ruled 5-0 against the plaintiffs, two of which have died since the lawsuit was first filed two years ago.

Liberal denominations beg Congress
to protect Planned Parenthood

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 19, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) -- Protestants take diametrically opposing views of abortion in America. While the Southern Baptist Convention just "declared war" on Planned Parenthood, calling on Congress to defund the nation's largest abortion business of tax dollars, other denominations are urging Capitol Hill legislators to continue giving half a billion tax dollars to the country’s largest abortion provider.

More than 150 liberal organizations, including the United Methodist Church, the United Church of Christ, and the African Methodist Episcopal Church as well as Presbyterian and Jewish organizations, signed a letter calling for U.S. senators to keep Planned Parenthood on the government dole. The letter also champions support for Obamacare and Medicaid expansion.

“We urge you to oppose any repeal of the Affordable Care Act, attempts to change Medicaid’s open-ended funding guarantee into a block grant or per capita caps, and any attempts to defund Planned Parenthood,” the letter reads.

The General Board of Church and Society of the United Methodist Church, United Church of Christ's Justice and Witness Ministries, the Women's Missionary Society of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and the National Council of Churches laid their weight squarely on tax funding for Planned Parenthood.

Other signing organizations under a religious banner include "Presbyterians Affirming Reproductive Options," the "NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice," the "National Council of Jewish Women" and several other groups professing Judaic foundations.

Besides other liberal, pro-abortion, and pro-homosexual organizations, the letter was signed by the League of Women Voters, the YWCA, and the Autistic Self Advocacy Network. All signing organizations are listed here.

"It’s scandalous that the United Methodist General Board of Church and Society is lobbying in favor of Planned Parenthood federal funding," Institute on Religion and Democracy President Mark Tooley, a Methodist, told LifeSiteNews.  

Tooley says his denomination is slowly transitioning from promoting a culture of death to affirming life. "United Methodism is heading in an increasingly pro-life direction and last year required the board to quit the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice. The board in its abortion rights advocacy represents a minority of USA United Methodists in an increasingly global and orthodox denomination that is returning to classic Christian teaching about the sanctity of all human life."

"Though only constituted as a denomination in 1957, the United Church of Christ (UCC) has been consistently in favor of abortion since the early 1970s," John Brown Jr. wrote in an expose on his denomination's historic support for abortion. "Even before that, a number of UCC clergy participated in ... as a nationwide illegal abortion referral system."

"The ongoing effort to bring change on the life issues within the UCC is somewhat akin to that of the pro-life movement to bring about change within our nation," Brown surmised. "Though there have been some victories, the UCC and the United States as a whole continue to promote a 'culture of death.'"

John S.A. Lomperis of the Institute on Religion and Democracy, himself a Methodist, told LifeSiteNews that the denomination's General Board of Church and Society (GBCS) is only one of several "subgroups" within the denomination that "sometimes contradict and fight with each other."

"In the United Methodist Church’s structure, there is only one body that can officially speak, represent, or DO anything on behalf of the entire United Methodist Church," Lomperis explained. "It’s called the General Conference. Its members are called delegates and are elected every four years, and I am one such delegate."

Lomperis went even further to illlumine the pro-abortion role of the GBCS. "This GBCS has long existed as a 'rogue agency' that only represents the most radical left wing minority of the church," he said. "We have been trying to bring accountability, but it has been a long struggle."

The U.S. House passed a bill to replace ObamaCare and defund Planned Parenthood, but the Senate has yet to act.  

It is important to note that the legislative effort to “defund” Planned Parenthood is misnamed. Planned Parenthood businesses charge for their services and will continue to.  The “defund” move simply redistributes tax dollars to non-aborting health clinics.

The House bill ensures health care access by redirecting tax funds to legitimate health clinics, which outnumber Planned Parenthood abortuaries across the nation 20-to-1.  Such legitimate health clinics offer much more comprehensive care and do not commit abortions.

Despite facts to the contrary, signers claimed that taking tax funding from the abortion behemoth would take away healthcare for the poor, including cancer screenings. 

Though its president and its promotional material proclaim the business does more legitimate healthcare for women than it does abortions, Planned Parenthood does not do mammograms, x-rays for cancer, biopsies, CT scans, endometrial biopsies, or many other basic cancer screenings.

Abortions outnumber even the simple, do-it-yourself breast exams at the nation's most lucrative abortion dealer.

Fargo, ND - When an ambulance was summoned on Wednesday to the Red River Women's Clinic abortion facility in Fargo, North Dakota, paramedics discovered that the gurney they used could not fit in the front door.

Instead, they went around to the back door and brought the patient out into an alley filled with trash dumpsters.

"It's almost like the Red River Women's Clinic sent this woman out with the trash," said Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue. "Their only employee seen at the scene wore a pink eared-hat that vulgarly objectifies women and reduces them to merely their reproductive parts. It is a disgusting view of women that should make the Red River Women's Center staff blush with embarrassment."

 During his campaign for president, and on his transition website, President-elect Donald Trump offered to “protect innocent human life from conception to natural death,” and “protect individual conscience in healthcare.”

 Cool.

 Let’s make sure he does it, and the right way.

 The Trump administration needs to cancel two regulations in particular.

 The first is the infamous Mandate requiring even religiously affiliated institutions to have contraception and some early abortifacients offered free in their health care plans. The feds have not yet stopped chasing and threatening the Little Sisters to force their will on them.

 The second is a regulation you may not have heard a lot about yet. It was issued in connection with section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) by the Department of Health and Human Services.  Section 1557 forbids “sex discrimination” in any health program or activity.  Obviously, “sex” means discrimination because a person is male or female, and Congress has always been clear about that.  The Obama administration’s new rule however, defines “sex” to include – among other things - discrimination based on “termination of pregnancy.” Of course, abortion-friendly judges and regulators will be only too happy to read this to require the provision of, or coverage or referral for, abortion.

 The rule has no conscience protection attached. Some people believe that an earlier enacted conscience rule might help (the Weldon Amendment), but the Obama administration has interpreted that rule narrowly so that it would not likely protect us.

 The idea that abortion is so essential to women’s freedom that it is “sex discrimination” to fail to embrace abortion is just sick. Any feminism possessed of a heart + rational mind must recoil.

 So how do we get the Trump administration to get rid of these awful legacies of the Obama administration?  Well, if Congress actually overturns the Affordable Care Act, the regulations attached to it would be out the window. Congress and the President-elect are seriously suggesting that option–but it could take them a while, even years.

 In the meantime, how can we protect institutions that object to contraception and abortion coverage? Two ways are possible:

 1. A Trump administration Health and Human Services Agency might write new regs protecting conscience rights. But remember this requires first, “proposed rules,” then notice and comment periods, then final rules.  Time consuming, but it’s a possible avenue.

 2. A Trump administration could also provide guidance to agencies not to prioritize enforcement of bad rules, while working to replace them with good ones. Also possible.

 We need to start making some noise about undoing these regs. Everyone should say something, but medical personnel – nurses, doctors, physicians’ assistants, etc. – are especially welcome!

 I wrote you a few days ago about what’s going on in the Philippines.

I’m writing again because I really need to hear from you.  It is vital that you respond to this email .

Catholics in the Philippines are facing a very serious threat from their new President. He wants to launch an involuntary Three-Child Policy (population control) in the Philippines.

The Catholic Bishops of the Philippines have asked for help from Population Research Institute as soon as possible.  

Therefore, I ask for your help.

Help to do what?  To teach citizens how to protect themselves against involuntary population control by working in the democratic process.

In just six weeks, we will be doing that in the Philippines.  

Who’s “we”?  Your Population Research Institute will be working with Family Life International of Australia, a proven partner in that part of the world.

We will teach 2,500 pro-life leaders and citizens

• How to work with the conventional media to educate their fellow citizens

• How to use social media to mobilize world opinion

• How to build coalitions

• How to mobilize citizens for mass meetings

• How to persuade an audience

• How to design a legislative strategy

• How to lobby

The Bishops asked us to provide this training.  They see it as the best way to protect their people from the population control plans of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Duterte was sworn in as President on June 10--and immediately began talking about a Three-Child Policy.  

Will it be modeled on the Two-Child Policy of China?  

Maybe Duterte is doing this because he is ideologically so close to China – that’s the Philippines’ biggest trading partner, after all.

You know what this kind of population control meant in China: pregnancy police, government-granted pregnancy licenses, forced abortions and forced sterilizations….  The most anti-human rights, anti-human life activity the world has ever seen.

We can’t let that happen to the Philippines, the most Catholic country in the world.  Over 80% of the people of the Philippines are Catholic!

This bad idea must be stopped in its tracks.

The birthrate is already going down in the Philippines.  The total fertility rate is already below replacement levels.  But that doesn’t stop President Duterte!

The road to a three-child policy has been slowly paved for decades.  

A 1967 Declaration on Population and established a Population Commission.  In 1970, Executive Order 233 empowered the Population Commission to start a national population program.

In 1971, The Population Act was passed, making family planning part of national development strategy.  Ever since then, a little bit at a time, more policies have been put into place that give the government power over the fertility of its citizens.  

Today the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act is on the books – and it’s the law that Duterte can use to start a pregnancy police in the Philippines.

Involuntary population control is a very real threat in the Philippines.

But only if the Catholic people of the Philippines don’t resist these policies effectively!

That’s where PRI comes in.

We have been asked to teach the Catholic people how to resist effectively.  

Forty years of leadership in the pro-life movement in the US and around the world have taught PRI how to work every angle, use every approach, fight every step of the way, find every new line of defense.

That’s how the pro-life movement has kept the fight going.

The Bishops of the Philippines have watched us work around the world.  They know PRI can bring the skills they need:  how to change public opinion, how to put laws under a microscope, how to build coalitions to stop bad legislation.

In other words, how to work peacefully within the existing legal and public policy system to defend the most basic of human rights, the right to live.

But we have to act right away.  

This fight will not wait until next year.  The battle is now!

Here is what the Bishops have asked us to do:

On  September 30, we will launch the biggest training blitz ever in the Philippines.  We will train 2,500 pro-life leaders from across the country.   Our team will barnstorm across many of the 7,000 islands that make up the archipelago nation and train even more activists.

President Duterte is ruthless.  When he sets a goal, nothing gets in his way. He has already told the world that he’s happy to have the same reputation as Idi Amin, the butcher of Uganda, in pursuit of his goals. (keep this hyperlink in the final?)

Duterte needs to know that his people -- and the world -- will not tolerate his making  a Three-Child Policy one of his goals.  

The Catholic people must make the political cost to him more than he is expecting.  

That’s why the Bishops of the Philippines asked PRI to do everything we can to train leaders to mobilize citizen sentiment against the anti-life, anti-family plans of Duterte.  As soon as possible.

It will cost us $20,000 to do the whole job.  It wasn’t a planned expenditure—how could it be?  Who knew it was coming?

Nonetheless, I told my staff to start working on it immediately.

Join us in boycotting the anti-disability film "Me Before You"

(Spoiler Alert)

The film Me Before You is set to be released this Friday, June 3rd. The film follows a romance between two of its characters, one of whom eventually ends his life at a suicide clinic because he does not want to live as a quadriplegic.

Liz Carr, a disability rights activist at Not Dead Yet UK, explains the terrible message of this story: “if you’re a disabled person, you’re better off dead”.

Whether or not the filmmakers intended this message, it is certainly there. This is where the “right to die” (i.e. the right to be killed) movement leads.

Films like this, which juxtapose the wonderful life the disabled person once lived, when he was not disabled, with the difficult life he now lives, create a negative portrayal of disability and contribute to the view that life under conditions of severe disability is not worth living. Me Before You, and the larger movement that inspired the movie, ignore the inherent dignity and beauty of human life, regardless of disability.

Campaigners who favor assisted suicide focus on ‘autonomy’ and ‘choice’, but choices always exist in a social context. The prejudiced view against the lives of disabled people in this film is also the view of too many people in society. The soft bigotry of low expectations and societal pressure influence the ‘choice’ to commit suicide.

There are sharp disagreements on this issue, and this issue personally affects many of us, but Not Dead Yet and other disability advocacy groups are right to recognise the danger inherent in this film and the message it sends.

All persons have inherent dignity and rights and it is a tragedy whenever an individual, disabled or not, fails to recognise that dignity.

The wish to commit suicide should not be met with encouragement or submission – it should be met with assistance to overcome the obstacles that the person faces. People who are contemplating suicide should be assisted to live, not to die.

Boycott anti-disability film "Me Before You"

I write to you today in regards to the film Me Before You, produced by Warner Brothers, which is set to be released this Friday.

In the film, the disabled character kills himself at a suicide clinic. Many people, disabled and not, are deeply concerned to see yet another film which casts non-disabled people as disabled people and shows the lives of disabled people as unworthy of living.

Please sign this petition to Warner Brothers, asking for an apology for the offence caused and for a public statement declaring that Warner Brothers does not support, or wish to promote, assisted suicide.

All U.S. public schools to go gender neutral...

WASHINGTON (UPI) — The Obama administration planned on 5/13 to order public schools to allow transgender students to use the bathroom with which they are most comfortable.

The administration is instructing schools across the country to permit students to choose their bathroom without restriction in reaction to a law passed in North Carolina requiring all transgender people to use the bathroom of the gender they were born.

“As is consistently recognized in civil rights cases, the desire to accommodate others’ discomfort cannot justify a policy that singles out and disadvantages a particular class of students,” wrote Catherine Lhamon, the assistant secretary of education for civil rights, and Vanita Gupta, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, in a letter to be released on Friday, The Washington Post reported.

The letter threatens to withhold funding from schools that force transgender people to use a bathroom other than the gender they identify themselves as, citing Title IX regulations prohibiting sex discrimination in federally funded schools.

If you think that men who are physically male should not share the bathroom with your young girls, perhaps a boycott is in order.

I told you barely nine weeks ago that I believed a crackdown was coming and your own religious freedom would be in jeopardy. I didn't really know it would hit this fast and hit this hard.

But here it is.

While the Supreme Court was pondering in Obergefell v. Hodges whether to invent—out of thin air—a constitutional "right" to same-sex marriage, we heard President Obama's own appointee, Solicitor General Donald Verrilli, admit that religious groups could be at risk of being punished if they stood by the tenets of their faith and refused to go along with the redefinition of marriage.

How would they be punished? By losing their tax-exempt status, crippling their ability to raise funds and accomplish their mission.

And more. Barely a week after the Obergefell ruling, the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries was emboldened enough to order a company called Sweet Cakes by Melissa to pay a lesbian couple $135,000 because Melissa declined to participate in their wedding by baking them a cake!

Some state government agencies and officials are already penalizing people for their moral and religious convictions about marriage!

What we are seeing are the side effects of a tragedy.

The New York Times columnist, Mark Oppenheimer, declared in Time magazine: "Rather than try to rescue tax-exempt status for organizations that dissent from settled public policy on matters of race or sexuality, we need to take a more radical step. It's time to abolish, or greatly diminish, their tax-exempt statuses."

Your freedoms are under fire in a way we have never before witnessed. We must fight back.

It simply holds the government to the same standard that we hold people to in a pluralistic society: Respect each other's genuinely held religious beliefs.

• This bill will prohibit the federal government from penalizing persons for their personal moral or religious beliefs in natural marriage in federal employment, grants, contracts, tax treatment, and other programs.

• And it protects individuals and organizations that believe, teach, or establish in codes of conduct that sexual intimacy is reserved for natural marriage.

Please respond quickly. We've been meeting with scores of Members of Congress and their staffers on the Hill, and as a result, this bill has momentum in Congress. At last count, 145 Representatives and 36 Senators have already agreed to cosponsor this crucial legislation. Even the powerful, conservative Republican Study Committee has thrown its influential support behind the bill.

All of this tells me one thing: If we take strong action together now, we can win.

OPPOSE S6017, WHICH WOULD ELIMINATE RELIGIOUS EXEMPTION

New York needs to mobilize to defeat this egregious violation of religious freedoms. By eliminating the religious exemption to vaccines, S6017would effectively mandate vaccination for virtually all students in New York.

S6017 was introduced by Senator Brad Holyman (D) District 27 on July 15, 2015 and referred to the rules committee. As the NY legislature is not in session, this bill will not move until after Jan 1, 2016, but the bill is active. With the legislature out of session and lawmakers not as busy, this is the PERFECT time to contact your legislators and kill this bill. In New Jersey when a similar bill was introduced this session, lawmakers were bombarded with messages and calls from constituents opposed to the bill, and the bill was stopped. Let’s bombard them and stop this before it gets going.

NY Assembly Okays Abortion During All Nine Months

 The New York State Assembly approved a bill that would codify a “right” to third trimester abortions. Right now, NY law does not specifically allow third trimester abortions, except when necessary to save the life of the mother. (Of course, we know from the Dublin Declaration that there are never cases where direct abortion is medically “necessary.”)

AB6221 adds a new “health” exception, stating that anything “relevant to the well-being of the patient” – including physical, emotional, psychological, and familial factors, and the mother’s age – is grounds for abortion. In other words, pretty much any reason at all.

For some indefensible reason, anti-lifers like to make a distinction between inside and outside the birth canal. Killing an unborn child inside the womb is just as much infanticide as killing a child outside the womb. We know that, but anti-lifers somehow don’t. 
Someone please logically explain why an unborn child who is one day away from his due date can be shot in the heart with poison, but a new born baby can’t?  Unless they want to explicitly defend infanticide, anti-lifers have some explaining to do.

Lori Kehoe, New York State Right to Life Director, told the Christian Post, “It is ridiculous that in 2015, with all the technology at our disposal, we are still arguing whether or not an eight month old baby in the womb deserves protection. It is doubtful that our descendants will look kindly upon this period in our history, when we fought for the right to dismember babies weeks, days and even minutes before birth.”

Unfortunately, this “health” exception already exists in every state. Doe v. Bolton, the companion case to Roe v. Wade, has a health exception that is so broad and vague it essentially allows abortion through all nine months of pregnancy.

Assembly member Deborah Glick, a chief sponsor of the bill, says “It guarantees a woman’s life and health can be protected.” Actually, what this bill guarantees is that New York would allow killing babies at any time during pregnancy, even if the Supreme Court overturned Roe. 

Oh, and a side note to proponents of abortion who think access to abortion “empowers pregnant women” by giving them control over their reproductive systems: It doesn’t. It empowers doctors. What if a woman wants to keep her baby, but her doctor decides that her well-being is endangered by the pregnancy? In the eyes of the law, women do not determine the status of their own health or well-being, doctors do. Consequently, legal reproductive “rights” only give women a fleeting sense of choice…so long as their doctors agree with them.

It will be difficult for this bill to pass the Senate. But even if it fails this time, abortion lobbyists will consider the defeat only temporary. They will try again.

Josh Craddock, a spokesperson for Personhood USA, tells Prolife.Buzz, “It’s sad that in the abortion capital of the world, New York City, Democratic lawmakers are trying to increase the number of abortions later and later in pregnancy. Abortion always kills a human being, no matter what stage of pregnancy it is performed in.”
New York abortion lobbyists are pushing hard to pass Roe-like legislation at the state level. Why would they make such an effort, especially in a state as liberal as New York? They wouldn’t, unless they had a very real fear of seeing Roe overturned. Let their fear encourage pro-lifers that the fight is not in vain, and the defeat in Roe is indeed temporary.

“Capital Punishment” Method for Unborn Babies

Just when you thought abortion procedures couldn’t be any more debased…

New York legislators are trying to legalize a new abortion method that will make sure unborn children are given the same kind of treatment as death row inmates.

Ironically, what New York is trying to do to unborn children would be seen as “cruel and unusual punishment” for even the most despicable criminals. And, in fact, New York does not allow capital punishment for prisoners.

Unborn babies, on the other hand, are fair game.

How ironic and how unfortunate.

The New York state Assembly proved that promoting the best interest of women doesn’t include pushing late-term abortions.

For years, the state legislature has been embroiled in a mulch-year battle over a package of bills designed to push the interests of women. The bills have been held up in part because it includes a measure that would promote late-term abortions in the Empire State. Despite strenuous support from pro-abortion Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the legislature has refused to pass the package of bills because of the abortion measure.

The abortion bill would allow an abortion procedure that has abortionists shooting poison through the hearts of unborn children to kill them.

Now, the state Assembly has approved part of the package of bills — specifically the abortion promotion measure Governor Cuomo strenuously supports.

Today in a vote of 94-49 the New York State Assembly approved passage of AB 6221, the extreme stand-alone 10th point from the previously packaged 10-point Women’s Equality Act, which would expand third-trimester abortions and allow non-doctors to perform abortions. Since 2013, abortion advocates have been holding the Women’s Equality Act hostage to this single dangerous bill, refusing to break the 10-point bill up. This session, however, the will of the voters was finally heard, and the stand-alone bills have been considered.

“Expanding cruel and brutal third-trimester abortions has long been a goal of the anti-life lobby who never met an abortion they didn’t like,” said Lori Kehoe, New York State Right to Life executive director. “With no regard for the fully developed unborn baby who is violently dismembered, or otherwise killed, the New York State Assembly once again put the abortion lobby above New York State women and their children.”

AB 6221, sponsored by Assemblywoman Glick, would change existing New York State law, which currently allows for abortion in the third trimester when the mother’s life is in danger, to allow abortion on-demand throughout all nine months. The law would be changed to allow abortion for any reason deemed “relevant to the well-being of the patient” including physical, emotional, psychological, and familial factors, and the mother’s age.

AB 6221 has no interest in the life of the living, developed, unborn human child, stripping away any protections the smallest members of our human family have.

“We now look once again to the Senate to hold the line in defense of the children which happens to also be in accordance with the will of the rest of the people,” added Kehoe. “It is ridiculous that in 2015, with all the technology at our disposal, we are still arguing whether or not an eight month old baby in the womb deserves protection. It is doubtful that our descendants will look kindly upon this period in our history, when we fought for the right to dismember babies weeks, days and even minutes before birth.”

For those who are paying attention, they will notice one thing about these kinds of procedures and their ramifications.

The dehumanizing nature of abortion is pushing humanity into a new dark age.

This kind of barbarism is spoken against in the Bible and other religious texts, and shows exactly what kind of ruin awaits us.

In a world where unborn children — fully functioning humans — can be tossed away like trash, it’s not a stretch to say all will be treated as such.

While the world might be less violent than it was a century ago, it’s certainly not any less murderous… is it?
